A Sandy Beach Almanac

You've landed at Sandy Beach, NSW, Australia: Lat. -30.15331, Long. 153.19960, UT +10:00 – local map & zoom Google map. I live in a cabin on this beach, 25 kilometres north of the traffic and shops of Coffs Harbour, 600 km north of Sydney. My intention is to post observations of Nature and life within 1 km (1,000 paces) of my South Pacific home.

Pregnant Gouldian

Pregnant Gouldian
Pregnant Gouldian,
originally uploaded by wilsonsalmanac.
Poor Lizzie can hardly fly at present and no doubt is 'great with egg'. Usually no Gouldian would let you pick them up, but she can hardly move. I even nearly trod on her on the floor.

Meanwhile, Johnny Gould is busy renovating last season's nest in the nesting box. What a man!

(If you also live with uncaged birds indoors, there's a flickr group called Uncaged! Birds in our homes just for you.)

Can birds be potty trained? Because I would think having an uncaged bird in your house would be quite a mess.

That's a pretty bird.

You have been a victim of the cheeky challenge.

I'm lucky, Josué. These birds do 99% of their pooping while roosting above the drainage hole in my shower. Plus, they each weigh only 15 grams and eat only seed, so their poop is minute and inoffensive.
